Food provides us with more than the sum of its nutrients-proteins, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals. It is condensed and transformed energy, the fuel that powers our entire body, influencing mental, emotional and physical health. Eating allows us to process and absorb the energies and nutrients stored in food.We are affected quite differently by fresh, whole, live, organic foods compared to processed foods containing the chemicals of artificial colors and flavors, preservatives, pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Therefore, food choices are instrumental in determining our health and quality of life. An unhealthy diet increases the risk for major diseases that impair well being, cause stress, pain, and strain and may be life threatening; whereas a healthy, balanced diet prevents weight gain, lowers the risk for diet-related illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and depression, and provides the energy necessary to keep our bodies mentally and physically fit.
