KNEE SURGERY
Dr. Bailie is a leading expert in the diagnosis and treatment of knee problems. Since 1996 he has had over 3000 patient knee encounters, resulting in more than 250 surgeries each year. He uses rehabilitative, advanced surgical (arthroscopic and arthroscopic assisted) and injection techniques (including PRP, hyaluronic acid, and cell therapy), to resolve symptoms of both common and difficult knee problems. He has helped create new, more advanced surgical techniques for the knee and contributes to clinical outcomes research.
COMMON PROBLEMS DR. BAILIE DIAGNOSES AND TREATS
- ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears, acute, chronic and revision
- Articular (Hyaline) cartilage disorders
- Chondromalacia (i.e. early arthritis)
- Chondral and osteochondral defects
- Collateral Ligaments (MCL, LCL-posterolateral corner)
- Loose bodies
- Mensicus tears
- PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) tears
- Patellofemoral problems
MPFL tears, mal-alignment, chondromalacia
lateral patello-femoral compression syndrome
- Patella tendon injuries
- Pes Anserine Bursitis
- Plica Syndrome
- Quadriceps tendon injuries
- Synovitis
COMMON TECHNIQUES OF TREATMENT
*Arthroscopic Surgery/Arthroscopic Assisted
Arthroscopic surgery involves filling the joint with water and placing a small fiberoptic camera through a one centimeter incision into the joint. This allows the surgeon to visualize all of the internal structures. Through a second one centimeter incision, a variety of surgical instruments can be placed to actually perform the procedure. In most cases, patients can be on their feet the next day and walk without crutches. However, in some situations, the use of crutches and/or a brace for a period of time, may be required in order to protect the joint from stress, especially in cases where a major reconstruction was performed of the joint surface. Some of the more common arthroscopic procedures are noted below.
- ACL reconstruction
- Meniscus repair
- Meniscectomy
- Patellofemoral surgery
- MCL repair
- Lateral release
- Cartilage Transplantation/Restoration

Knee Chondral defect
- PCL reconstruction
- Chondrocyte transplant
- Micronized cartilage transplant
- Autograft/allograft cartilage transplant
- MPFL repair/reconstruction
- Posterolateral corner reconstruction
*Open Surgery
While many knee procedures can be treated arthroscopically by a skilled and knowledgeable Orthopedic Surgeon, there are some knee problems which occur outside of the joint itself. Because these structures are not within the joint cavity, they may require an open incision to be made and cannot effectively be treated with arthroscopic techniques.
- Quadrideps tendon repair/reconstruction
- Tibial tubercle osteotomy
- Patella tendon reconstruction/repair
