ORTHOPEDIC SPORTS MEDICINE
Orthopedic Sports Medicine is a distinct subspecialty of Orthopedic Surgery. Prior to 2010, to be an considered an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Surgeon only required completeion of an ACGME accredited sports medicine fellowship program. Many nonqualified physicians were practicing in this specialty and, in 2010, the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS.org), in conjunction with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS.org) changed the criteria for a physician to officially be classified as a “Sports Medicine” surgeon. It is now required that an Orthoepdic Surgeon complete an accredited sports medicine fellowship AND pass an ABOS board certification exam every 10 years to receive a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. This certification requires rigorous training and is only available to Orthopedic Surgeons. This is NOT the same sports medicine certification obtained by other nonsurgical, medical specialists, such as internal medicine, family practice or physical medicine/rehabilitation physicians.
Dr. Bailie received his CAQ in 2010 and is an active member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM – Sportsmed.org).
