Although a one payor system seems to be ideal, we have already seen the limited access of care for patients with government sponsored health insurance. As with all countries using “socialized” healthcare, access becomes restricted and wait times excessive for those without private insurance. It is one reason so many Canadians flock to the US for elective surgery/care every year (Canadians cannot purchase private insurance in Canada but can in the US). In France, UK and other countries with socialized healthcare and the ability to pay cash or use private insurance, patients can “jump the line” when they do not use entitlement healthcare resources. We are now starting to see this occur in the US as Medicare/Medicaid have slashed reimbursements, making it cost prohibitive to provide elective care to recipients. None of these outwardly affect EMERGENT care.
