PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)
PRP is derived from the patient's own blood and is inherently rich in growth factors. Although there are numerous methods and commercial kits available to prepare PRP, not all are created equally nor result in the same injectable material with similar biological effects. Understanding the differences and usefulness of each is crucial to achieving success with this treatment. Recently touted by some as a magic "cure-all" or misrepresented as "stem cells" with miraculous properties, PRP has been widely studied by the orthopedic community for years in hopes of determining the most effective uses, methods of preparation and techniques. PRP is currently only FDA approved for use to augment bone grafting in specific situations. In other conditions, it has been shown to actually be a detriment to healing. Dr. Bailie has performed clinical research on PRP in a variety of shoulder and knee conditions and has worked with this technology in numerous applications. He understands the currently available scientific data regarding PRP and recognizes when it may have merit.
